Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the large refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main complex or building. Adding to the safety aspect, it is required that "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed in the vicinity. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure that can only be accessed by authorized employees. It is vital for the safety of the operator, as well as everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.

To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This job can utilize retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also important to have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. Operator Training

A part of this training also includes the correct method of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also involves site-specific procedures and the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving.

Medical Treatment
MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheets must be located in all facilities where lift trucks are operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are used on site. This would also cover the propane which is utilized to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the lift truck battery.

MSDSs sheets have to be available for all personnel at all times. If any exposure incident happens for example, the individual needs to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is needed, to must be given without any delay. Usually, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is needed, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a medical professional if you truly think it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
